Election Day as a Federal Holiday

Election Day as a Federal Holiday
The Issue
Election day in the U.S. is always the first Tuesday in November. Most citizens work and/or have school on Tuesdays, which makes it difficult to vote. Many young voters and lower class citizens are especially impacted by this due to working multiple jobs, working jobs along with classes, working longer than normal shifts (12-16hrs), and lack of efficient transportation.
Every citizen should be able to vote in every election if they choose to, without school or work obligations interfering with that right. I am petitioning to make Election day a Federal holiday to make it easier for citizens to be able to vote.
Adding a holiday to the year would give us a total of 11 federal holidays for the year, which may be a deterrent for Congress so I am also willing to give a possible solution to that problem.
Columbus day celebrates a person who caused many, many deaths and stole land from the indigenous people of the Americas. It is sad that we continue to celebrate this man knowing what he did, just so we can have 10 federal holidays.
In order to have a truly democratic society we must make sure every person has the ability to vote in every election. Voting is a right, not a privilege.
