This headline says it all: “Smithfield, Tyson Said Their Plants Had to Stay Open to Feed America. They Shipped Meat To China Instead.” These giant meat companies have been claiming that they are doing everything in their power to keep the meat supply chain secure while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of their meatpacking workers. This couldn’t be further from the truth, as thousands of Tyson Foods employees have continued to fall ill in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
And as Senators Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker wrote in a recent letter to the CEOs of Tyson Foods, Smithfield Foods, JBS USA, and Cargill: “Your companies created the conditions that left your workers and the supply chain vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic – but instead of addressing them, you used the prospect of food shortages to secure a federal license to put your workers in harm’s way.”
Tyson’s behavior is repeatedly and deeply immoral—and it’s unacceptable.
Join us urging Tyson to stop putting profits above workers’ wellbeing, animal welfare, and public health by completing the following actions:
-
Action 1 - Email Tyson’s Communications Manager, Morgan Watchous to let her know that consumers aren’t buying Tyson’s lies. You can either click here or use the sample copy below as inspiration for your own message.
Subject: I don’t trust Tyson.
Body:
Dear Ms. Watchous,
I recently saw this disturbing video about Tyson Foods: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpxJ5xJTHek I was so saddened to learn about Tyson’s long history of cruelty.
How can you be okay with your own coworkers being treated so terribly? Tyson is letting them get sick by the thousands by refusing to enact adequate safety measures.
It’s clear that Tyson will put profits over just about everyone and everything. I definitely won’t be purchasing any of your products again, and I’ll be sure to tell my friends and family to do the same. -
Action 2 - Comment on Tyson’s Instagram post to show them that we won’t stop until they make meaningful changes!
Example: @TysonBrand, it’s time to stop prioritizing profits over your workers’ wellbeing, animal welfare, and public health. DO BETTER! - Action 3 - Follow us on Twitter to stay up to date on the latest campaign news!
