Turn this stoplight green! Road safety and stoplight advocacy in Kailua Kona

The Issue

I am planning to contact the county to advocate for the installation of a new stoplight at a nearby intersection ( Kaiminani drive and Mamalahoa highway), which has been the site of frequent accidents due to the lack of proper traffic control measures. Through this initiative, I aim to emphasize the critical importance of road safety, with the goal of preventing future accidents and minimizing the risk of serious injuries.

Currently there are plans for a new stoplight, however they occur in 2045, this process needs to be sped up! Through my research I discovered almost 1500 people are going through the intersection during peak traffic hour. This contributes to a high likelihood of dangerous turns and confusion in the road. The lack of a stoplight has created a hazardous environment for drivers and pedestrians which increases the risk of serious accidents. Currently there is only a stop sign, which doesn’t do much! I believe that installing a stoplight would not only reduce the frequency of accidents but also contribute to a safer and more orderly flow of traffic.

My name is Helly Hughes and for a school project I have noticed a need for stoplight advocacy in the community. I am taking interest in this community issue because I have seen a need for this stoplight to decrease driving and biking risks. Living close by to the intersection, I have heard many accounts of people being nervous when turning at this intersection, so I hope you will sign this petition and convince to Department of Transportation to speed up this stoplight process!
