Turn Newington College into a Girl School

Turn Newington College into a Girl School

The Issue

To the Administration and Board of Directors of Newington College,

We express our collective concern and disagreement with the recent decision to introduce co-education at Newington College. We firmly believe that the historic boys' school should remain single-sex, and that a co-ed environment would be damaging to the students education. That is why we ask for Newington College to be transformed into an all-girls institution. This petition outlines our reasons for advocating this change and seeks your reconsideration of the current co-educational approach.

Firstly, we draw attention to the current academic ranking of Newington College (142 as of 2023), which, despite the high fees parents pay, is not reflective of the expected standards of a supposedly "elite" school. We propose that an all-girls school would foster an environment conducive to academic excellence, as studies suggest that girls tend to be more studious. By making this transition, we anticipate an improvement in the school's academic performance, ultimately justifying the financial investment made by parents.

Furthermore, we acknowledge that single-sex educational institutions often exhibit positive outcomes, with girls thriving in such environments. The potential for enhanced focus, reduced distractions, and tailored teaching methods for female students could contribute significantly to the academic success of Newington College.

In addition, we note that the boys at Newington College have expressed their disagreement with the recent changes, and we hear their concerns. Considering this, we firmly believe that it would be in the best interest of the new girls who will be attending not to have to deal with the potential challenges and conflicts arising from this transition. In this context, we posit that creating an all-girls school would not only address the concerns raised by the boys, and parents who are afraid of their sons being "educated with girls", but also streamline the educational environment, making it easier for all students to focus on their studies without unnecessary distractions.

In conclusion, we respectfully urge the Administration and Board of Directors to reevaluate the recent decision to introduce co-education at Newington College. We believe that transforming the school into an all-girls institution would not only greatly improve academic outcomes but also contribute to the elimination of unnecessary complications and potential distractions associated with co-education.

Thank you to everyone who has spoked up, for your unwavering commitment to educational excellence and for not succumbing to the absurd notion that boys and girls can coexist peacefully in a learning environment.
