Prevent Nazi blogs from harassing and scaring users.
The Issue
***EDIT AS OF AUGUST 6TH, 2015***
I have edited this with new information as well as changes to issues that were made known to me through my Tumblr link to this post, and tried to figure out how to fix them the best I can. I hope that these changes do not make you regret singing this petition.
As many of you already know, anti-Semitism is on the rise worldwide and the Internet is of course no exception. This has always been a problem on Tumblr, but after Yom HaShoah on April 16th, 2015 (or Holocaust Remembrance Day in English) there has been a huge increase in neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and other hate groups sending Jewish users anti-Semitic messages and using the submission box to send “gore” or rather: pictures of their dead, primarily from the Holocaust. I realize that these attacks seem to come in waves, but they give little to no warning to when they will attack so this problem is far from over. As I expected, they're back after months of inactivity and there is an additional problem to add on and that's the recommendation system Tumblr is using is allowing Nazi blogs to be recommended to Jewish (and other) users, and I am aware that this system uses nouns and recommends based on those but I don't believe any Jewish user wants to follow a blatantly Nazi blog.
I changed the original title of this petition because a fellow Tumblr user explained to me that blocking an IP address could potentially block a whole network such as a school, apartment complex, library, workplace, coffeeshop, etc. from messaging a user regardless of their intent. Also, that most people have a “dynamic IP” as in you get a new IP address with each login, and you can change your IP at any time with one quick call to an Internet service provider. Also, now that Tumblr has a legitimate blocking feature there isn't as much need this time.
Solutions that we have come to terms with (feel free to inform me of more solutions or edits of these).
- Have a requirement for each user to validate their email address with each new account using a main email service (not 10minutemail or similar providers) since most major email service providers require a good amount of personal information to set up an account, and Tumblr does not have email validation at the moment.
- Require every person who wants to ask an anonymous question to have a Tumblr account since at the moment anyone can ask a user a question regardless of whether they are a user or not.
- Even though there is a blocking feature instead of the "Ignore" one in the past, it only blocks by URL instead of account. This needs to change so that all blogs on an account are affected.
- And finally, to terminate any account that violates the Community Guidelines three times (one report equals a first warning, two reports is a final warning and possible suspension, and a third report is account termination) based on reports from other users for things such as harassment, hate speech, or illegal activity.
Tumblr, how you are handling this is ridiculous! What these people are doing is in direct violation of your Community Guidelines and you’re letting it go as though it’s nothing. This not free speech or freedom of expression, this is cold-blooded hate speech with the intent to deeply disturb and hurt people. There is no reason to allow this behavior.
Even if you are not Jewish, Rromani, or a member of any other group these people may target, please sign this!
***WARNING FOR JEWS/SENSITIVE PERSONS***: Image above contains slurs, Holocaust references, and other offensive language. Look at your own risk. I also apologize if you saw them before this disclaimer.
