Thank You to everyone who supported this petition and for those that submitted complaints through the official TIPS system. It has taken considerable time, and persistence to see this issue through, but our voice was heard. We feel that we’ve made good progress in some areas, and not in others. Several leaders in the TPS Central Administration have been very helpful, and we appreciate the time they have taken to hear our concerns and more importantly, take action. Here are some of the changes as a result of the TPS investigation into our complaints: Positive Changes: 1) The TPS Investigation confirmed complaints that multiple TPS policy violations had occurred. The Carver Athletic Director, Deana Holt, was removed from her AD role, and she subsequently resigned from Carver in Dec 2016. 2) Prior Coaches were informed by TPS Leadership that some District Training was implemented/enhanced using this incident as an example. 3) The requested Intramural Program is now officially supported at district level so more students can be involved. Still optional per school and must be approved by Principal. No word on Carver adopting this for next year. Not Changed: 1. Even after coaches’ and other parents’ complaints were confirmed via the TPS investigation, the Principal at Carver, Melissa Woolridge, has not apologized to the coaches nor has she made any effort over the past year to work with the many impacted parents to heal the Carver community. There were several acknowledgements by central TPS administration that this situation was not handled well. We remain deeply disappointed in her behaviors and with her lack of leadership. Other: 1. The district athletic department crafted new Middle School Rules for Try-outs seeking to address our parent concerns of school bias in the team selection process. We still feel it is step backward from the coaching program that was in place prior to this incident, however, it did provide district level oversight of the tryouts at Carver this May, which helped parents feel better about the process given our concerns. There may have been other changes, but no formal communication has been provided to us parents to confirm anything we had not witnessed directly. More than ever, Tulsa Public Schools needs our community support, and a close community relationship with parents and students. Positive changes only occur if our voices are heard. Please remember to thank and show appreciation for TPS employees that do great work, and be sure to voice concerns regarding employees to TPS leadership directly or anonymously via TIPS Reporting System, so that improvements may be made.
