PREVENT THE ILLEGAL CLOSURE OF PEPIS HAIR SALON

PREVENT THE ILLEGAL CLOSURE OF PEPIS HAIR SALON

The Issue

For half a century Camden Market has been a home to second-hand shops, street food, live music and all things punk and goth, thus making Camden Market the most iconic center for alternative culture and a thriving tourist destination.

However, Camden Market has been bought by landowners Market Tech, who are planning to transform Camden, market by market and in the process, they are bullying and illegally evicting shop owners by increasing their rents. Many traders have been forced to close their businesses, thus losing their only livelihood.

Pepis Hairdressers have been part of Camden Market for 23 years, have a valid contract yet they are being forced to close their business. Please help us stop Market Tech from illegally evicting Pepis Hairdressers from their rightful home.

The Decision Makers

Sadiq Khan
Mayor of London
Responded
Dear Petitioner Thank you for the petition submitted on the change.org website about ‘Preventing the illegal closure of Pepis hair Salon. The Mayor understands the important role of London's markets, and the social, economic and civic value they contribute to Londoners' everyday experience of the city. That is why the Mayor has committed to supporting street and covered markets to ensure they prosper and thrive for years to come. At a city level, the Mayor has set up London's first Markets Board and commissioned new research to better understand the current position of London's Markets, which has revealed a significant increase from 162 markets in 2010 to 280 markets today. You will find details about the Board and research - Understanding London's Markets - on the City Hall website at: www.london.gov.uk/what-we-do/regeneration/london-markets. Given the large number of street markets in London and the fact the Mayor holds no powers in this respect, we are not in a position to intervene directly in the management of individual markets. However, working with the London Markets Board we hope to look into some of the issues you raise at a strategic level through a renewed focus on the role, value and management of street and covered markets across London. We will make sure your concerns are raised with colleagues at Camden Council. Yours sincerely Public Liaison Unit Greater London Authority
