Newcomb College constitutes an important institution in the history of education and female autonomy in the history of our country and city. In the wake of Katrina, it was decided that the college should be dissolved. Today, the student body, and more imprtantly the Newcomb Scholars, are left solely with the physical indices of its legacy. The Newcomb Scholars, in their effort to to continue the legacy of the countless generations of women who furthered themselves with the college's help, have a right to the physical framework of that legacy. The 20th century demoltion of New York's Pensylvannia Station testifies to the mistake Tulane has elected to make. Interpolation is always difficult, but we have no doubt as to the eventual regret this action would generate. The demolition of the building would constitute further erasure. The building, a designated historic landmark, must be preserved. The student body was not consulted during the formation of the decision and discontent is widespread. We deserve the context of our past. This physical context is essential for the continuation of Harriot Sophie and Josephine Louise Newcomb's legacy. Another route of action must be taken. We will not allow the NCI House to be demolished.
This petition rsolely epresents the opinions of the signed Tulane students, alumnae, and alumni.
