Waive Fees & Reduce Tuition - Summer 2020

Waive Fees & Reduce Tuition - Summer 2020
The Issue
The emergence of COVID-19 has affected virtually every aspect of society and communities around the globe. Our community here at Temple University Japan is no different. Many students, both Japanese and foreign, have experienced these adverse effects both academically and financially. Since shifting to online-only learning in March, the quality of our education has suffered greatly along with our access to the facilities and services advertised and offered to us by Temple University Japan. While the leadership at TUJ has made efforts to address these concerns, we do not feel they are sufficient. The officers of the Student Government are unanimous in our belief that all students are entitled to a reduction in tuition for this upcoming Summer 2020 semester. The following are several TUJ services and benefits that, as of today and the foreseeable future, students do not have access to:
- TUJ Library
- In-Person Professor Consultation
- TUJ/Showa Pool & Recreation Center
- Showa Campus
- TUJ Open Field
- TUJ Parliament
- TUJ Computer Labs & Services
- TUJ Art Gallery, Lab, and Studio
- TUJ Audio Recording Room
- TUJ Green Screen & Backdrops
- TUJ Wi-Fi
- TUJ In-Person Counseling Services
- TUJ In-Person Career Services
- TUJ In-Person Academic Counseling Services
- TUJ Campus Events (Spirit Day/Club Events{Monthly Movie Nights})
-Various inherent benefits of studying alongside our peers.
Since many of these services and facilities were inaccessible from March, we feel that students are entitled to the facilities fee, media fee, and other fees associated with some classes to be waived completely. Additionally, the quality of our education has suffered greatly from the limitations of teaching a curriculum online that was designed to be taught in person. Many foreign students have also found themselves in a position where it is potentially unsafe to return to their home countries. However, due to the requirements of their Visa, they are required to be enrolled in courses. For these reasons, we also unanimously believe that tuition should be discounted by 20% to help alleviate the precarious financial situations many of us and our fellow students have found ourselves in due to economic effects COVID-19 has brought about. Through our assessment of the losses that students will be facing in terms of benefits offered by the Campus, the Student Government, on behalf of the student body, urges the Leadership of TUJ to take these further actions.
