On November 10, Tufts University’s Fletcher School and Tufts Hillel will host Israeli Defense Forces Lt. Col. Dr. Eran Shamir-Borer, one of the primary architects of this summer’s massacres in Gaza. Tufts Hillel describes Lt. Col Dr. Eran Shamir-Borer as the “IDF’s legal advisor for Operation Protective Edge.” This latest assault on Gaza killed 2,127 Palestinians by the IDF's count and was third in what has become a nearly biannual series of massacres. As legal advisor Shamir-Borer masks the IDF's indiscriminate bombing of family homes, schools and crowded urban areas in Gaza by claiming legally sanctioned self-defense. His "creative" interpolations of international law veil the reality of destruction wrought by Israel in Gaza: according to the BBC in Gaza 475,000 civilians are living in emergency shelters or with other families, 17,200 homes were destroyed or severely damaged by Israeli attacks, 58 hospitals or clinics are damaged, 244 schools have been destroyed or damaged and 1,462 of those killed in Gaza were civilians. Shamir-Borer does not deserve a platform. He deserves a trial. We cannot allow hate speech to masquerade as free speech. We are calling on Anthony Monaco, as the President of Tufts University, to stand up against the genocidal logic of the Israel’s so-called “defense” forces. We call on President Monaco to condemn the celebration of a man who makes a living hiding the brutal reality of Israeli settler colonialism. We call on President Monaco to uphold the University’s values of active citizenship and global leadership by canceling this event.
