Support Our Blueprint for Creating Inclusive, Anti-Racist, Academic Institutions

The Issue

THIS PETITION IS FOR ALL PREP SCHOOLS

This petition was started by David Minh Wong. David is Black, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Puerto Rican, and his blend of cultures has him to help create equitable, inclusive, diverse, and anti-racist institutions for students of all backgrounds.

David and 20 New England Prep School alumni of all races, ages, religions, and genders collaborated to create this six part plan to create anti-racist, equitable, inclusive, diverse academic institutions.

If we can change the hearts and minds of our future leaders, we can change the world.

Executive Summary:

We have created this document because, candidly, we were concerned by the lack of thorough plans to combat systemic racism in academic institutions. We have yet to see a petition from students or a plan from schools that has the potential to make the lasting impact that this document does.

Notable Hotchkiss alumnus, Ray McGuire, recently stated in his interview with CNBC that Covid has exposed the virus that has plagued our country for 400 years, systemic racism. Systemic racism will not end with relatable comments and million dollar donations. 18 countries, including America, have acknowledged that systemic racism exists. We’ve been here before, in the space opened by extreme racist violence. This time it’s different. It has to be.

Our plan covers changes and adjustments to the following five topics:

1) Leadership, hiring, and contracting
2) Financial inclusion
3) Curriculum and learning adjustments
4) Mobilizing students, parents, and alumni to create internship and mentorship opportunities
5) Accountability systems to document and address instances of discrimination or violence

We end it with our closing remarks which are intended to inform the reader that if we do not take bold, sweeping actions in our academic institutions, our country will have the same levels of racism and inequity in our society 50 years later.
