Changes to the way Trowbridge Mosque is run

Changes to the way Trowbridge Mosque is run
The Issue
We believe that the Mosque committee does not represent the diversity of the ethnic groups of Trowbridge and surrounding areas who have helped to build it and that non-Moroccans/ North Africans are not allowed to become trustees. We also believe that some members of the Moroccan community feel that the Mosque belongs to Moroccans and we believe that the trustees have not condemned this and also feel the same way and some of them have stated that they will not allow Asians (specifically) to become trustees.
In addition, we believe that the Mosque trustees are not able to retain a full time Imam nor do we believe that they currently wish to do so. In addition we believe that they wish to allow unqualified people to deliver the Friday sermons and lead the prayer. Minutes of a Public Meeting held on 15/07/18 highlight all of this and are available upon request.
Therefore, we kindly ask that the Mosque trustees take the following action:
- Call for a public meeting and rewrite the constitution to allow membership from the public and put in place a democratic system where trustees are made up of representatives from the diverse ethnic community rather than being only of Moroccan/ North African descent.
- That the trustees condemn racism not just by words but by action too and make it clear to anyone claiming the Mosque to belong to the Moroccan community that such views will not be tolerated.
- A vision document to be created and agreed with consultation from the community which will address how the Mosque will move forward in meeting the religious and worldly needs of the community.
- The current trustees of the Mosque should resign.
- Hold an election of trustees where anyone in the community can stand including the current trustees but this time the trustees would be voted in by the members of the community.
- The criteria for trustees should be broader than 'Fearing Allah' as is pointed out by current trustees as we believe in the Qur'anic verse that 'Only Allah knows who fears Him' (Qur'an 53:32). The criteria should rather be based on experience, skills and vision for the community, all of which will be up to voters to decide and vote based upon. Being a Muslim and having a good character and morals goes without saying but true belief (or 'hypocrisy' as ascribed by trustees to some in the community) is not something that can be measured or judged by current trustees or anyone else except God.
We do not believe this is too much to ask and firmly believe this will unite the community and take it forward rather than backwards.
