Museum of Military Medicine – Stay in Aldershot!
The Issue
The Museum of Military Medicine has been housed in Keogh Barracks since 1981. It houses collections from the Royal Army Medical Corps and Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Medical Corps, but also the Royal Army Veterinary Corps and the Royal Army Dental Corps. It is part of the history of Aldershot as the Home of the British Army since Victorian times.
The proposal to move it to Cardiff has no historical or cultural relevance. The Cambridge Military Hospital pioneered huge medical advances in plastic surgery and treatment of wounds during the 19th and 20th centuries. Florence Nightingale designed and supervised the running of that hospital. The place for the museum should be in the heart of Aldershot.
Bringing the collection into the heart of Aldershot will benefit the town and keep the military heritage of the area alive.
We call upon all those involved to think again and keep the Museum in Aldershot!
