We, the undersigned faculty, staff, students, alumni and concerned friends in the community of Santa Clara University, stand in solidarity and support of our colleague, Danielle Fuentes Morgan, and her family, who were victims of unwarranted and racially motivated behavior by members of the Santa Clara University “Campus Safety” unit. 

We are profoundly saddened and angered by this incident and the behavior of these “Safety” officers. At a time when the entire nation is focused on the impact of generations of abuse of communities of color by the police it is particularly appalling that such an incident took place on our campus, which has been so strongly associated with social justice and equity here in the United States and around the world.

We call upon the University President and Board of Trustees to issue an apology to Professor Morgan and her family and to announce an independent investigation of the incident that includes a comprehensive review of the management and culture of the University and considers defunding police activity on campus.
