The Trump administration is considering new 100% tariffs on foreign films, claiming it’s a way to protect American cinema.

But this isn’t the solution.

It’s a threat — it will destroy American filmmaking, it will damange international collaboration, will hurt independent theaters, and to U.S. filmmakers whose work depends on global audiences and partnerships.

If President Trump truly wants to support American film, he should start by listening to the industry itself — not imposing top-down policies that could spark trade wars and shrink cultural access.

We call on President Trump to meet directly with filmmakers, producers, distributors, and theater owners to understand the real challenges facing American cinema.

Develop smart, sustainable solutions that strengthen the U.S. film industry without isolating it.
