The app is used primarily for entertainment, and is a source of joy for both teens and adults. It allows users to express themselves and find laughter in a multitude of 15-second videos. The platform is also a source of education for millions. Videos bringing awareness to current events and social issues have become especially prominent in recent months.

Recently, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared that the Trump administration is considering banning the app. One reason for doing so is to 'punish' China for COVID-19, but the creators of the app had nothing to do with the spread of the pandemic. The government is also concerned for U.S. security because the app is Chinese-created. However, the CEO of Tiktok is Kevin Mayer, who is American. In fact, many of the Tiktok employees and leaders who work in public policy, security, and safety are American as well.
