True Lies or False Truths?? The Problem of False Confessions.
The Issue
Justice for Lawrence: Request a Review of a 20-Year Conviction
My husband, Lawrence Johnson, has spent more than 20 years in prison following the tragic death of his three-month-old daughter. The family has endured unimaginable loss, grief, and separation. We respectfully believe that his conviction deserves a fresh and independent review.
A central concern in this case is the confession that was used to secure his conviction. We believe this confession was unreliable and should be carefully re-examined in light of what is now known about false confessions. Research has shown that innocent people can and do make false confessions under certain circumstances, including intense interrogation, psychological pressure, exhaustion, grief, confusion, or fear.
At the time of his daughter's death, my husband was a grieving father facing an unimaginable tragedy. We believe the circumstances surrounding his interrogation and confession deserve closer scrutiny. In addition, medical science relating to diagnoses such as Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) and Abusive Head Trauma (AHT) has evolved significantly since his trial. Medical findings once presented as certain have become the subject of ongoing scientific debate and re-examination. We also have concerns regarding the effectiveness of his legal representation and whether critical issues were fully investigated and presented during his defense.
Before this conviction, my husband had no criminal history. He served honorably in the United States military and dedicated his life to helping others as a Drug Counselor. He was known as a caring husband, father, veteran, mentor, and respected member of his community. We are not asking the public to determine guilt or innocence.
We are asking for a fair review of the evidence, the confession, the medical testimony, and the circumstances that led to his conviction. After more than two decades, we believe justice requires a second look.
Please join us in calling for a thorough and independent review of the conviction of Lawrence Johnson.
Every signature helps raise awareness and supports the pursuit of truth, fairness, and justice.
Thank you for your support.
