Trudeau Government: Ensure Accountability & Integrity in Canadian Diplomatic Appointments

The Issue

We reject the Appointment of Sikandar Sultan Raja as Ambassador to Canada

As concerned citizens of Canada, many of us have deep roots in Pakistan and are painfully aware of the human rights violations happening under its current regime. We have grave concern regarding the recent decision made by the Pakistani government, which lacks popular representation, to appoint Sikandar Sultan Raja as the ambassador to Canada.

As the current Chief Election Commissioner, Mr. Raja has been directly involved in denying Pakistani citizens their fundamental democratic rights. His record is marred by numerous violations of human rights, including allegations of complicity in abductions, torture, extrajudicial killings, vote rigging, dissemination of false information, and accepting bribes. His actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the rule of law and a belief that he is above accountability.

It is evident that Mr. Raja's appointment does not reflect the will of the majority of Pakistan's population. Furthermore, it is important to note that over 90% of individuals of Pakistani origin in Canada, would vehemently oppose his presence as an ambassador representing their homeland.

Canada has long been a champion of human rights, although there have been instances of silence on certain matters. Nonetheless, we trust that as a democratic nation, Canada will not permit the entry of an individual with such a questionable background to operate within Canadian borders as a representative of an undemocratic regime.

While we cherish our freedom of speech here in Canada, many of us also have family members back in Pakistan who endure severe human rights violations under the current authoritarian regime. We refuse to be coerced or manipulated by someone like Mr. Raja, who may seek to suppress dissent among Pakistani-Canadians exercising their right to freedom of expression.

Allowing Mr. Raja to serve as an ambassador on behalf of a regime that lacks legitimacy and exhibits fascist tendencies would only serve to advance his personal agenda and jeopardize our rights as Canadians. His presence would inevitably import corrupt practices and a disregard for the rule of law into our country.

Considering these concerns, we urge the Canadian government to carefully consider Mr. Raja's background and track record before granting him entry into Canada. His appointment poses a threat to the values of democracy, human rights, and rule of law that both Canada and Pakistan claim to uphold.

We hope for an appropriate action in the best interests of both nations and their citizens.
