The Issue

In 2018, the animation studio Troyca animated an adaptation of Nio Nakatani's Bloom Into You. The story follows Yuu Koito, a girl who has never fallen in love, as she enters high school. She immediately receives a confession from Touko Nanami, the student council president who is infamous for rejecting every confession she receives. The anime ran for 13 episodes, and was licensed by Sentai Filmworks and streamed to HIDIVE with English Subtitles and an English Dub available.

As of 2019, there were over 850,000 print copies in Japan alone. It placed 4th in the 2017 Next Manga Awards from Niconico and Da Vinci. The manga has also ranked on Oricon's weekly manga rankings chart, with Volume 4 reaching 30th place and Volume 5 reaching 21st place. The manga placed 3rd in AnimeJapan's 2018 "Manga Most Wanted as Anime by Fans" poll. The anime is currently (as of 08/29/2020) rated 7.6 on IMDB and 7.94 on MyAnimeList, making it the second highest rated Shoujo Ai anime, behind YuruYuri San Hai. It previously held a score of 8.03, and was the highest rated Shoujo Ai anime for a period of time. MyAnimeList user RebelPanda wrote, "Bloom Into You is not a romance. Rather, it is a love story about self-realization." He ended is review saying "Without a doubt, Bloom Into You is the best anime I watched from this season, perhaps even the year. It is a masterfully crafted, unforgettable experience that will leave an impact on me for years to come." The anime adaptation covered the first five volumes of the manga, leaving only three left. It covered the first 28 chapters, leaving 17. Assuming that they adapted roughly two chapters per episode, a second season would only have around 8 episodes. This is, of course, an option. It could give the studio and producers room to possibly adapt the spin-off novels into an OVA if they chose. Of course, another option would be to make the final 3 volumes a theatrical release. I haven't read the source material myself, so I'm unsure of which option would be better as far as pacing is concerned, which is why the title reads second season/film continuation.

Obviously, during the current world situation, a lot of things have become a bit messed up as far as the industry is concerned. With big anime getting delayed, and smaller projects being cancelled altogether, it's hard to say whether or not something like this is feasible right now. However, I think if it could be done in the future, it absolutely should. I think the series is popular enough to justify a second season, especially with the sales of merchandise and DVDs. Many people, myself included, absolutely loved the anime, and would love to see it to the end.
