Triple J have responded to both this petition, and wider community discussion around January 26th, with an official statement which can be found here: http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/musicnews/s4538008.htm
It is our hope that this petition space will continue to grow, and continue to be a point around which those who understand the significance of January 26th for Indigenous Australians can rally, share their thoughts, and hear from others. We will consider this petition a ‘success’ when Triple J announce the day they plan to change the Hottest 100 to, and will leave the petition open until such time as this announcement is made.
We would like those within Triple J management, as well as the ABC, to think carefully about this call, which is nothing more than a request for deeper fidelity to their already stated aims of “recognis[ing] Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, people and culture as integral to Australia’s history and heritage and believ[ing] it has a special role to play in facilitating the ability of Indigenous Australians to protect, promote and develop their diverse cultures, languages and local heritage.”
Triple J, and the ABC, are in a double-bind here where any choice is a political statement. In any double-bind, preference should be given to those whose voices and experiences have been otherwise placed under erasure.
The most important work you can do, from here on out, is continue to contact musicians, political representatives, and your friends and family to help continue generating as much discussion and support as possible.
