It is not acceptable that the only statement released by Trinity University on the issue of students' rights amid the trump administration crackdown has been one of bigotry and affirmation of anti-trans legislation. We invite you to stand with TU YDSA and petition President Beasley, the Dean of Students, and the Board of Trustees to publicly state the intention of the University to protect the rights and safety of all students on campus regardless of race, class, or gender identity.

Petition for the Safety and Protection of Students at Trinity University

To: The Dean of Students, President Vanessa Beasley, and The Board of Trustees

We, the undersigned students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members of Trinity University, call on the university’s leadership to take a clear and unequivocal stand in support of the safety, dignity, and rights of all students, especially those who are most vulnerable. At this moment, it is imperative that Trinity University reaffirm its commitment to protecting its LGBTQIA+, immigrant, and minority communities in upholding the values of equity, inclusion, and justice.

We demand that Trinity University publicly vow to:

Protect Trans and Queer LGBTQIA+ Students: Trinity University must commit to safeguarding the rights, safety, and well-being of its transgender, queer, and broader LGBTQIA+ student population. This includes the maintaining of safe spaces, continuing to provide adequate mental health and medical resources, and ensuring that LGBTQIA+ students will continue to be free from harassment, discrimination, and violence on campus.

Enforce the Status of Trinity University of a “Protected Area” from unlawful investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE): Trinity University must declare itself a sanctuary campus and commit to not allowing ICE agents on campus grounds, except when legally mandated with a judicial warrant. The university must also commit to protecting students, faculty, and staff from any form of intimidation, detention, deportation, or unlawful distribution of a student's information related to their immigration status without proper legal means.

Uphold Principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in Admissions: Trinity University must not allow external political pressures or anti-DEI sentiment to influence its admissions practices. The university should remain dedicated to fostering a diverse student body by committing to the vision of equity and inclusivity outlined in the 2024 Strategic Plan. The University should ensure that its admissions decisions continue to reflect a commitment to these principles, free from discrimination or bias based on race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic background.

We believe that these demands reflect the values of a truly inclusive, safe, and just academic community. Trinity University must take decisive action to support its students and uphold the principles of human dignity and academic freedom.

We urge the administration to respond promptly and transparently to these demands and to work collaboratively with students and community members to implement these policies. By doing so, Trinity University will reaffirm its commitment to the safety and well-being of every member of its community.
