A huge thank you for all the supporters of this petition, and to the students and staff of the college who lobbied and facilitated change!! I will now be closing the petition, since it has achieved what it set out to do.  While the main link attached is to the article showing that the theatre will be changed, here are a few other things I found interesting while watching the discourse surrounding this. There is also an article about how we in Trinity have a library named after a slave owner, the Berkeley, which should be the next thing to be renamed. (Rename everything? I'd argue yes; not to forget or to sanitise, but to investigate, reconsider, and, if appropriate, rename.)

'Lessons about renaming university buildings' : https://profjoecain.net/lessons-about-renaming-university-buildings/ "In sum, it’s all about which heritage stories you want to tell. Those are going to change. They are changing. They have changed. Universities need to grow with that change in mind."

A really great article about the renaming of a college in Yale that gets to the heart of why such symbolic things like names can be upsetting: https://www.thenation.com/article/archive/when-does-renaming-a-building-make-sense/ "In particular, students of color and those with other marginalized identities spoke to the power symbols and memorials have to announce priorities and demarcate the boundaries of inclusive and exclusive spaces." "we cannot settle for others’ exclusion, or our own"

And finally, on the Berkeley library in Trinity: https://universitytimes.ie/2022/02/trinity-is-dragging-its-feet-on-the-berkeley-library-question/  "If College can move rapidly to correct its heralding of certain physicists, there is no reason for the Berkeley name to remain."
