Tell the Tri-Cities Kiwanis to stop sponsoring the Kelly Miller Circus which PETA recently cited for elephant abuse.

The Issue

The most prestigious circus in America, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, has conceded that the public no longer supports transporting elephants around the country to perform under duress. Consequently, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey will be phasing out its elephant acts in the next three years. Other circuses must accept that the days of elephant exploitation are long over and should retire their elephants to sanctuaries.

Elephants are highly social animals who suffer when denied the company of other elephants. According to PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), the Kelly Miller Circus forces one "lonely, sad elephant named Anna Louise" to perform in 200 locations in 16 states for 38 weeks out of every year. Kelly Miller Circus describes Anna Louise as "that delightful dancing elephant." In reality Anna Louise is an intelligent and sensitive animal that is not dancing for joy.  She poses and prances only because she fears her handler's bullhook, a three-foot metal club with a sharp spike that is used to beat and stab elephants into compliance.

The Tri-Cities Kiwanis has sponsored the Kelly Miller Circus in Grand Haven, Michigan, every summer for years. Kiwanis International claims that Kiwanis clubs focus on improving the world one community at a time. Tell Tri-Cities Kiwanis to improve the Grand Haven community now.  They should stop sponsoring and promoting the Kelly Miller Circus in Grand Haven, Michigan, this summer and every summer, and sponsor only cruelty-free circuses that do not use wild animals of any kind.
