Stop the closure of essential community library services in Luton

Stop the closure of essential community library services in Luton

The Issue

Libraries are the hub and heart of communities. They are essential for our children's education and used by people of all ages for reading, research, community interest, Internet access and social interaction.

Luton Borough Council has a responsibility to provide a library service that adequately serves all Luton residents. The closure of Wigmore, Sundon Park and mobile libraries will leave thousands of Luton residents without access to a library.

Luton Borough Council has delegated the running of the town's library service to Luton Culture, an organisation which runs as a charity with unelected officers in charge. Luton Culture is given funding by the council and from London Luton Airport in order to provide 'museums, libraries and culture' services for the town but does not provide detailed accounts to the Council. We are therefore calling for:

·         Luton Borough council and Luton Culture to be held accountable for the provision of library services for all in the town.

·         Luton Culture to be held accountable for the money they have received and spent and be forced to provide detailed accounts for the council and public to see.

·         For the planned Wigmore, Sundon Park and mobile library closures to be put on hold while the council investigates Luton Culture's budgeting priorities and conducts a democratic consultation with local tax payers.
