Trauma Informed Care: Support Families Through Birth, NICU, and Loss

The Issue

I am Athena, a mother who nearly lost her life to preeclampsia, PPROM, and postpartum hemorrhage. My son was born at 32 weeks and spent 44 days in the NICU. We survived, but not without deep scars.

What I remember most is the silence. No one explained my risks, no one told me what to watch for, and no one prepared my family for what was coming. My story is not unique. Thousands of families endure traumatic births each year. Some lose their babies, some lose their partners, and many are left to navigate grief, fear, and lifelong consequences without support.

This movement is for them. 🌸

The Problem

  • The U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate in the developed world.
  • For every maternal death, 50 families experience near-death “close calls.”
  • Beyond survival, families face trauma, NICU stays, loss, and postpartum mental health struggles with little guidance or support.

Our Mission: Trauma-Informed Maternal Care

We are calling on hospitals, lawmakers, and health authorities to make trauma-informed care a standard in every maternity setting:

  • Honest conversations with at-risk patients about their risks and warning signs.
  • NICU & bereavement support for families navigating trauma and loss.
  • Postpartum mental health coverage and extended follow-up beyond six weeks.
  • Education for families in plain language about what to look for, what’s normal, and when to seek help.

No family should face birth trauma in silence.

The Walk: Fractured Petals

The Fractured Petals Walk will bring survivors, families, and allies together every year to:

  • Honor survivors, NICU families, and those lost to birth trauma.
  • Raise awareness of the maternal health crisis in America.
  • Fund support services that families desperately need.
  • Demand systemic change so trauma-informed care becomes the norm.

How You Can Help:

  • Sign the petition to demand trauma-informed care at the policy and hospital level.
  • Share your story to break the silence.
  • Spread the word — every signature is a voice for change.
