Stop NZTA’s proposal to widen State Highway 1 to six lanes between Grenada and Linden (Option C)

Stop NZTA’s proposal to widen State Highway 1 to six lanes between Grenada and Linden (Option C)
The issue
What are NZTA proposing?
NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) is proposing a new transport link between Tawa/Porirua and the Hutt Valley. NZTA call it the Petone to Grenada Link Road. NZTA originally considerd four options to link the proposed Petone to Grenada Link to SH1, known as Options A,B, C and D.
Options A & B are no longer being considered. If they were reconsidered, they would likely result in the widening of SH1 (we would also oppose this).
Option C connects P2G to Grenada and Tawa and includes widening SH1 to six lanes between Grenada North/Tawa Interchange and Linden at the future Transmission Gully Interchange, significantly affecting properties immediately alongside the highway and all residents in the wider Tawa valley.
Option D provides connections to Grenada and Tawa and also provides a two lane connection with Transmission Gully, significantly affecting Takapu Valley properties.
How NZTA decides to connect the P2G traffic to Tawa and Transmission Gully will have a significant impact on the greater Tawa community.
Who is ‘Stop the Motorway Widening’ (SMW)?
We are a group of concerned Tawa residents who are opposed to NZTA’s proposal to widen State Highway 1 (SH1) to six lanes between Grenada and Linden (Option C).
Petone to Grenada Link
SMW are not opposed to the Petone to Grenada section (P2G) of the link road and are not objecting to this part of proposal. We want NZTA to connect the P2G traffic to Tawa and Transmission Gully in a manner that will not have such significant negative impacts on the greater Tawa community.
How could this proposal affect all Tawa residents?
If Option C is chosen there will be (amongst other things):
- - significant disruption to traffic on SH1 for 5yrs (proposed construction period
- 2019 – 2024)
- - increased congestion at the Tawa Interchange particularly at peak times
- - major disruption to Tawa if traffic is diverted through the Main Road as a result
- of SH1 becoming blocked due to an accident or other significant event
- - a signficant increase in traffic noise and vibrations coming from a widened
- motorway that will be closer to all homes in Tawa
- - greater risks to the community from air and visual pollution and contaminated
- run off
- - significant impacts on Tawa College and Tawa Intermediate as classrooms
- will be lost and traffic will be closer to the children, increasing safety concerns
- - a permanent negative impact on Tawa residents who live close to SH1,
- especially on those families who may lose their entire properties or portions of
- their properties
- - increased traffic on SH1 as commuters, trucks and long distant travellers use
- P2G as an alternative route to SH58 to get to and from the Hutt Valley and
- Seaview. P2G will provide a faster, safer and more direct route.
