Protect pedestrians and cyclists with a safer Catford Road

The Issue

As people who live, work and travel in Catford we are deeply saddened by yet another fatal road accident on our streets.

It has been known for years how dangerous Catford Road is. The stretch of the South Circular which passes through Catford, around the gyratory, past the Council and Broadway Theatre, past Catford and Catford Bridge station and onto Forest Hill and beyond.

  • The bridge over the rail line is too narrow. Buses, lorries, cyclists and pedestrians squeeze across this major road.
  • There is no pedestrian crossing on the main road outside the two stations or across many side roads, many choose to try to cross at the traffic lights but there is no pause in traffic flow.
  • The underpass is unwelcoming, people don't feel safe using it and most choose not to.

We know what needs to be done and there are already some plans in place. But work isn't due to start until 'after 2020'

We need Transport for London to work together with the Council and others to bring this work forward urgently AND to take any possible steps to improve safety in the interim.

The Decision Makers

Responded
Dear Petitioner Thank you for the petition submitted on the Change.org website about Catford Road. The Mayor and Transport for London (TfL) were deeply saddened by the tragedy in Catford on 30 October and all our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died. TfL is also aware of the collision that happened nearby the previous day and is assisting the police investigations into both incidents. It is unacceptable that anyone should lose their life on London’s roads. The Mayor’s Vision Zero approach drives our commitment to eliminating all death or serious injuries from London’s roads by 2041. Last year, as part of Vision Zero, TfL introduced a commitment to “Go Look See” at the site of every fatal collision that happens on its road network. During these visits, engineers, road danger reduction and borough officers carry out observations of the condition and layout of the road and look for any road user behaviour that may have been a contributory factor. This process is not part of the formal investigation but helps capture recommendations for action. TfL visited the site in Catford on 4 November, alongside Lewisham Council officers. As an immediate response, TfL is considering whether interim safety measures such as improved signage, improved maintenance of the subway and renewals of the yellow box junction at the junction of Ravensbourne Park would be purposeful. In the medium-term, as you state in your petition, TfL is working with Lewisham Council on a scheme to reduce road danger in Catford town centre as part of the borough’s Masterplan for Catford. Proposals for the scheme include segregated cycle lanes, new pedestrian crossings and realignment of the South Circular (A205). Design options are now being developed and TfL plans to consult on proposals in 2020 in line with the public consultation for Lewisham Council’s Masterplan. TfL is currently investigating how delivery of the scheme could be brought forward. The fatality on 30 October took place just outside of the area that is currently in scope for the town centre scheme. However, in light of this tragedy, TfL and Lewisham will review the scope of their joint work to see if it can include the junction of Catford Road with the junction of Ravensbourne Park to ensure proposals are fit for purpose and implemented as quickly as possible.
