Four years ago tonight - at just before 6pm -Jack Ryan died on Battersea Bridge.
Whilst out jogging, he was crossing the bridge when he was hit by a black Range Rover being driven at speed from Beaufort Street. We now know that the car was being driven by Rashid Ali, who was jumping the lights when they were on amber.
Ali was sentenced to five years in prison at the Old Bailey in September - but he was not in court. A Pakistani national, who was in England on a student visa, Ali had already jumped bail months earlier and fled to his home country, which does not have an extradition treaty with Britain.
Once in Pakistan, Ali quickly got married and I have been told that his wife has since had a baby. So, Ali has never served a day in prison and gets to enjoy a new life, but what of justice for Jack and his family?
Since the court case, I have asked all the relevant authorities about any on-going efforts to extradite Ali from Pakistan so he can face justice. NONE of them have provided any answers. It feels as if the case has been left to drift. This not right and I demand that the authorities petition the government of Pakistan to extradite Ali.
How can British law allow for someone accused of a crime that warrants a custodial sentence to be out on bail without surrendering their passport? And for there to be no restrictions on someone who is in the UK on a Visa, whose birth country has no extradition treaty. Surely they are a prime risk of 'flight'. It makes no sense. The Bail Act must be amended.
This evening, I will walk by Battersea Bridge and remember Jack Ryan. Then raise a pint in his memory. Maybe two. Actually, most definitely two!
Rest in peace, Jack. Justice will prevail.
