Transport For London WILL install a Green Man crossing at Battersea Bridge
I am happy to tell everyone that TFL has formally announced that a new pedestrian crossing will be installed at the north side of Battersea Bridge as soon as possible.
The decision has been made to build this crossing first and delay on-going discussions about other sections of the crossroads, which had reached an impasse this week.
Separating the various issues will make action happen more speedily. Consultation will begin in two weeks time and a shovel could be in the ground by the autumn, or maybe sooner (I'm reliably informed that this is super fast!).
Safety has been a major concern at Battersea Bridge for countless years, yet all complaints and fears raised by residents have, until now, been stonewalled by TFL. Even attempts by MP Greg Hands and well-meaning councillors has led nowhere. However, just five weeks after launching this campaign, action is now in motion.
Huge credit must go to TFL Commissioner Andy Byford. He responded positively to the campaign from the very out-set. He even got on his Brompton bike to meet me at the bridge within hours of me writing a direct plea to him to step in. As soon as he saw the dangers facing pedestrians on the bridge he promised to take action. He has been true to his word and I have been impressed by his determination to make a difference.
There have been many conversations and meetings between me, the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, and TFL officers in recent weeks. My thanks to Councillor Johnny Thalasittes at RBKC and Penny Rees at TFL. Both have worked hard and with great positivity to find a solution. Other traffic tech officers have also grafted diligently behind the scenes.
Although it is indeed great news that a Green Man crossing will come to Battersea Bridge, there is no real sense of celebration. The significance of it pails into irrelevance when you stop to remember that this has only happened because of the tragic events of 13th January.
The death of Jack Ryan has been utterly devastating to his family, his girlfriend, and to his wide group of friends and work colleagues. I have been in contact with many in Jack's circle in recent weeks and I have been touched by their support for this campaign, despite the magnitude of their grief. My thoughts remain with them all.
It is clear that People Power has made all the difference with this campaign. Never forget that it WORKS! My sincere appreciation goes out to each and every one of you (25,764 as I type) who signed the petition, posted comments, tweeted out support, and sent encouraging emails. Thank You. (RM: 19/2/2020)
