Caledonian Underground Station latest:
Petition hits 1,000
TfL figures show that Station needs at least three lifts
Two lift proposal will not cater for increase in demand
Decommissioned lift shafts should be brought back into use
There is no need to close the station for eight months
Campaigners today claimed that figures released by London Underground make a clear case for the station to remain open while existing unused lift shafts are brought back into service.
Nigel Scott said, “TfL lacks foresight; is placing cost ahead of safety and passenger inconvenience and ignores the needs of the disabled”.
“TfL has lost the argument. It is time for Mayor Boris to step in, withdraw the proposal and come up with a less disruptive plan. Residents and businesses are united against the station closure. Already, one thousand people say no.”
Details:
Two close stations closed at the same time.
The proposed closure overlaps with Tufnell Park Underground – already closed for lift work and not reopening until March 2016. This means that residents who live between the two stations will lose all local tube connections for three months.
Three lifts is the minimum required for the safe future operation of the station.
It reaches capacity in both morning and evening peaks. When there are track/signalling problems and extended intervals between trains, overcrowding at platform level is already worrying and is a health and safety issue. When one lift breaks down (frequently), the remaining lift is already operating at 100% capacity according to London Underground's own figures. Passenger numbers are continuing to rise by at least 2% per year. A two lift plan does not allow for further growth. If one lift breaks down, the remaining one will be unable to cope.
19,000 passenger movements a day – huge loss of time and money for no reason.
Thousands of passengers will lose time and money every day (e.g. minimum daily walking time to and from Holloway Road tube 30mins x 8 months). Many will have to pay for buses as well as tubes. The station closure will disrupt 19,000 journeys per day – four million over the eight months.
