Accessibility for South Harrow, West Harrow, Rayners Lane and North Harrow stations

Accessibility for South Harrow, West Harrow, Rayners Lane and North Harrow stations

The Issue

Struggling elderly, the disabled and young parents with children and buggies desperately need step-free-access to South Harrow tube station (40 steps), West Harrow and Rayners Lane (both having 33 steps) and North Harrow station (40 steps).

Transport for London and the elected representatives who should have fought for their case have let them down for a long time. I have spoken to many affected people in these areas that agree and have explained their difficulties in navigating the stations due to these issues. It is almost impossible, or a dreadful inconvenience, to use these stations for anyone who is infirm or has mobility issues.

Let us work together as a community to get lifts or escalators installed.

London Underground should be accessible to all. We cannot wait for too long, the longer we wait, the longer people will struggle.

The Decision Makers

Sadiq Khan
Mayor of London
Responded
Dear Petitioner Thank you for the petition submitted on the change.org website about accessibility for South Harrow, West Harrow, Rayners Lane and North Harrow stations. The accessibility of the public transport system remains one of the Mayor’s key priorities. This is vital to allow Londoners to live, enjoy, explore and work in the city freely. In the Mayor’s draft Transport Strategy, there are plans to improve the overall accessibility of London’s transport system, to make it more navigable and accessible to all. The Mayor made a commitment of £200 million funding for further step-free stations which is unprecedented. This funding will provide level access at around 30 more stations, focusing on main interchanges and town centres in outer London, and will close some of the biggest gaps in step-free provision. The first 23 stations to be funded have been announced: Harrow on the Hill, Newbury Park, Amersham, Buckhurst Hill, Cockfosters, Mill Hill East, Osterley, South Woodford, Colindale, Knightsbridge, Boston Manor, Burnt Oak, Debden, Hanger Lane, Ickenham, North Ealing, Northolt, Park Royal, Rickmansworth, Ruislip, Snaresbrook, Sudbury Hill and Wimbledon Park. As a result of this work, along with the opening of the Elizabeth line and other major station projects, 40 per cent of our network will be step-free by 2021/22, up from 27 per cent today. Transport for London (TfL) has certain criteria when considering stations for inclusion in the programme. These criteria include cost or opportunity (e.g. availability of third party funding), how challenging construction will be and the strategic importance in delivering benefits to our customers at a particular location, for example where there are currently limited accessible transport options. Harrow on the Hill and Sudbury Hill have been identified as key stations in the London Borough of Harrow to receive funding under the current step-free access programme. Though South Harrow, West Harrow, Rayners Lane and North Harrow stations have not met our initial criteria for funding under this programme, it is possible they may be included at a later date if circumstances change, for example if a significant opportunity emerges, such as funding becoming available from a third party. The Mayor and TfL are committed to making London’s transport system more accessible, to make it easier for everyone to enjoy and work in London. Thank you for taking the time to petition the Mayor on this important subject. Yours sincerely Public Liaison Officer Greater London Authority
