Around July 2021 i noticed the traps for the first time on China Town Stadium station in Vancouver, while riding train to work. There were few of them trapped and they were still alive. Immediately I contacted the TransLink customer service by phone and they pretended that the traps are not set by them and said they are unaware of it. It was so new to me and i tried doing everything i could to rescue them. It was the time when Vancouver was hit with the hottest weather. I did not leave any stone unturned because it was very depressing and heartbreaking watching them in traps every morning on the way to work. I tried spreading the words by opening the petition. Many who signed the petition got involved into calling the TransLink, it took some time but they finally admitted setting traps but they denied involvement of any cruelty, constantly they were telling us that they monitor traps every week and make sure that the pigeons have food and water. But two weeks past by and the pigeons were still trapped. By end of the third week i noticed them dead inside the trap. We continued calling, spoke with their supervisor and they were telling us they are investigating but still didn’t remove those dead pigeons. I hired a photographer to capture some pictures, although from a moving train in 4 seconds of time we weren’t expecting perfect pictures but even the blind eyes could see that there were dead pigeons in the trap. We sent those pictures to Spca, and TransLink both said they were investigating, and spca gave us animal cruelty hotline, we forwarded images, videos but there was no outcome, every time we called, they said the same thing that they are investigating .Four weeks after the pigeons were dead, they removed the remains, and put the cardboard around the trap to block the view from Train passengers. But i could still see from the corners, if there were pigeons trapped. Pigeons were dead inside the traps more than one time, yet in the CBC news report, Spca is advising that we should report it to animal cruelty hotline if we notice them dead inside the traps? Both spca, and TransLink were aware of it, we have emails to proof the previous reports with zero outcome. I understand that pigeons have growing population, which can be controlled humanely, rather than using our tax money towards cruelty, luring and trapping methods which may never work. Most of the European countries have built the public aviary for pigeons, where people enjoy feeding them, yet their nests are controlled by removing their eggs and placing it with fake eggs, this method is the most humane way to control their population, and at the same time feeding them in aviary prevents them from going around businesses and peoples balconies. TransLink mentioned that the trains stopped many times because of the pigeons going in tracks and set the alarms off, yet tracks are filled with human wastes such as empty cans of pop, shoes etc. Pictures below shows at least in three occasions pigeons were dead inside the traps, they just lure them with some seeds, once they are trapped it’s not important whether they starve to death or suffocated in buckets after. Maybe when they are dead inside the traps it’s easier for pest control, they don’t have to grab them and suffocate them in buckets. Not only TransLink but Spca should be held accountable for not taking action after numerous reports were made and proofs were sent. Witnessing this act of cruelty has caused many of us a great stress and anxiety, they are responsible it. And with the avian flu going around, this could be big health hazardtrapping and letting these birds die in cage and leaving remains for weeks inside the trap.
