Calling on Translink to provide a better, more fair train service to/from Newry train station to Belfast and Dublin. It appears that Translink are discriminating against the people of Newry with the substandard service they provide.

Trains from Newry per day to Belfast = 10 (Only 9 direct)

Trains from Portadown per day to Belfast = 46

Trains from Lisburn/Bangor to Belfast per day = 49

Newry has a make up of 89.6% Catholic and 9.4% Protestant compared with Portadown which has 31.8 % Catholic and 60.9% Protestant. Lisburn has a make up of 36.55 Catholic and 55.9% Protestant. Bangor has a make up of 11.2% Catholic and 81.68% Protestant.

The last train leaving Belfast for Newry is at 20:05 while the last train to Portadown and Lisburn leaves Belfast at 23:10 and to Bangor at 23:22

Last train home from Belfast to Newry is 20:05, over 3 hours earlier than to any of the other stations. If citizens of Newry are in Belfast to enjoy a day out, evening out or a concert in the SSE arena – they are expected to be finished by 20:05 while everyone else can stay in Belfast until at least 23:10.

Why are the people of Newry being discriminated against in this way?

Why are Translink allowed to be treating the people and city of Newry as second class?

Our expectations from Translink are to ensure:

Commuter services are enhanced to Belfast from Newry in the morning times and that all services are direct without changing in Portadown.

Frequency of trains throughout the day are enhanced without the 2+ hour gaps in services.

That more local NI railways services are provided during the day to/from Belfast to serve Newry and not just Portadown.

That we get a late train home in the evening like all other stations, the last train home should also come to Newry and not stop at Portadown only.

We are provided with extra services when events are on and not made to be crammed in to already busy Enterprise trains.

That Translink work with Irish Rail to enhance the frequency of trains to Dublin. Enterprise replacement trains could be used to fill the big gap in times.

Translink provide Dublin passengers with a proper commuter train home at 18:00.
