Transition to Virtual Learning Due to Severe Weather Conditions in Potomac, MD

The Issue

I am a resident of Potomac, MD where our roads have become increasingly icy and dangerous due to the recent snowfall. The forecast predicts more snow on Friday, which will only exacerbate the situation. Our safety is at risk every time we step out of our homes to attend school. Given that we are likely going to have only one day of physical schooling this week due to weather conditions, it seems reasonable and safer for us all if this day could be transitioned into virtual learning.

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 39% of all weather-related vehicle crashes occur during snowfall or sleet. This statistic highlights the potential danger that students and staff may face while commuting under these conditions.

Moreover, amidst a global pandemic where virtual learning has been proven effective across various educational institutions worldwide, it seems unnecessary and potentially harmful for us to risk our lives for just one day of physical schooling.

Therefore, we urge our local school authorities in Potomac, MD to consider transitioning this week's remaining school day into an online format. By doing so they would ensure not just continuity in education but also prioritize student safety during these harsh winter conditions.

Please sign this petition if you believe in prioritizing safety over tradition and support the call for transitioning into virtual learning under severe weather conditions.
