The Issue

Living on woodshutts street in Kidsgrove, Stoke-on-Trent has become increasingly troublesome due to the constant stream of vehicles using it as a shortcut to avoid traffic lights. Recently, I experienced a profound impact when my car was damaged by another vehicle. Unfortunately, I am not alone in this plight; many of my neighbors have faced similar issues, with their cars being sideswiped or damaged in other ways.

The current situation poses a significant risk, not only to our vehicles but also to the safety of pedestrians, including elderly residents and children who frequently cross the road. The narrow street is ill-suited for the volume of traffic that recklessly uses it as a cut-through, often at dangerous speeds. The street's original design was intended for a quieter, community-focused environment, and not for heavy transit traffic.

By transforming woodshutts street into a one-way street or a cul-de-sac (dead end), we can significantly reduce non-residential traffic, enhancing the safety and quality of life for everyone in our community. Both options would deter through traffic while allowing residents the access they need to their homes. Moreover, this change can preserve the integrity of our neighborhood, making it safer for children to play outside and for families to walk without fear.

Numerous studies indicate that measures like converting streets into one-way systems or cul-de-sacs significantly reduce traffic accidents and improve road safety. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that one-way street conversions can reduce accidents by up to 30%. This change is not only beneficial but necessary to protect our community.

Join us in urging the Stoke-on-Trent City Council to take immediate action to implement these changes. Your signature on this petition will amplify our call to transform woodshutts street into a safer, more livable area. Please sign and help us make a difference in our neighborhood's safety. Together, we can ensure a peaceful environment where residents can thrive without the constant threat of through traffic.
