Transform Virginia's 'At-Will' Employment to 'Two-Party Consent'

The Issue

Living in Virginia, I know what it feels like to carry the weight of “at-will” employment. It’s like walking on shaky ground, never sure if today might be your last day on the job. That constant uncertainty makes it hard to plan for the future, provide for our families, or feel safe in the work we dedicate so much of our lives to. The stress of wondering if you’ll be suddenly let go, without reason or warning.....is exhausting, financially and emotionally.

Right now, Virginia law gives employers the right to fire anyone, at any time, without explanation. That might be convenient for companies, but it leaves workers vulnerable and powerless. Hardworking people deserve stability, respect, and the security of knowing that their jobs won’t disappear overnight for no good reason.

We’re asking for change. We want Virginia to move away from “at-will” employment and toward a “two-party consent” system. That means jobs can only be ended if both sides agree, or if there’s a clear and fair cause. It’s a simple step, but it would give workers peace of mind and the dignity they deserve.

This isn’t just an idea; it’s already working in places like Montana, where laws like this have created more loyal, motivated, and productive workplaces. When people feel safe in their jobs, they give more, stay longer, and help build stronger communities.

Now, picture a Virginia where people don’t have to live in fear of being let go without warning. A Virginia where workers can speak up, share ideas, and stand up for themselves without the constant threat of losing their livelihood. A Virginia where employers value their people and invest in them, knowing they’re in it together.

That’s the future we’re fighting for. But it won’t happen without your voice.

We’re urging Virginia’s leaders to finally stand up for workers and fix this broken system. By signing this petition, you’re saying that every Virginian deserves fairness, stability, and respect at work. Together, we can turn fear into security and insecurity into hope.

Join us. Let’s make “two-party consent” the law in Virginia and give working people the protection they’ve needed for far too long.
