Growing up, my life was deeply intertwined with individuals who courageously embraced their identities, whether bisexual, gay, lesbian, trans, or any of the vibrant expressions of the LGBTQ+ community. Unfortunately, the world was not as accepting. Criticism and discrimination were the harsh realities faced by not only my peers but adults as well, perpetuated by those who chose to condemn rather than accept. Tragically, the weight of these societal rejections led to untimely deaths among my friends and loved ones, some succumbing to the mental strain, while others were victims of the grievous hate crimes that remain a stain on our society.

The Trevor Project's hotline remains a beacon of hope for many in our community, offering support and understanding when it is needed most. However, its function under the 988# could be compromised following changes from previous government administrations. To ensure its survival and unhindered operation, it is imperative that the Trevor Project Hotline evolve into a self-standing entity, separate from potential political fluctuations.

Making the Trevor Project its own tax-exempt nonprofit organization will not only safeguard its existence but also fortify its mission: to support LGBTQ+ youth through life's toughest moments. This transformation can secure dedicated funding and allow for expanded outreach and more robust resources tailored specifically to meet the distinct needs of this community.
