Transform the DOT Site in Shirley/Mastic, NY into a Community Park

Transform the DOT Site in Shirley/Mastic, NY into a Community Park
The Issue
Having spent my childhood in Mastic, NY, I've witnessed first-hand the need for a welcoming and accessible space where families and friends can come together. The transformation of the underutilized New York State Department of Transportation property, known as the 10-3 Shirley Yard, into a vibrant community park is not just a dream but a necessary evolution for our community. A community park will serve as a safe haven where residents can enjoy green, open spaces, engage in sports, host community gatherings, and foster deeper connections with one another.
Currently, this plot of land is languishing in disuse, a missed opportunity in a town that deserves more recreational areas. Studies have shown that green spaces are crucial for fostering healthy communities. According to a report from the American Planning Association, parks not only enhance public health by providing opportunities for physical activity but also reduce crime and increase property values. By converting Shirley Yard into a community park, we can create a safer, more vibrant, and inclusive environment for all residents of Mastic, Shirley, Mastic Beach, NY.
We propose the development of this park to include facilities for sports, walking trails, playgrounds for children, and picnic areas. This will provide activities for all age groups and foster a sense of community pride, as well as offer educational opportunities for schools and youth groups to engage in community service projects or environmental education.
Project Overview:
Purpose: To convert the currently unused DOT property into a community park featuring various recreational amenities.
Key Features: The proposed park will include:
-A central track and field area for walking, jogging, and sports.
-Four pickleball courts to encourage active recreation.
-Two playgrounds designed for children of different age groups.
-A pavilion for community events, picnics, and gatherings.
-A main building at the front of the park housing bathrooms and a security room.
-Additional bathroom facilities for visitor convenience.
The benefit to residents extends beyond recreation. Parks are proven to improve not only physical health but also mental well-being by reducing stress and promoting relaxation. Additionally, a community park can be the starting point for local events that bring people together and enhance the community spirit of Shirley and Mastic.
This project promises long-term benefits by creating a legacy for future generations, empowering our children to grow up in a positive and nurturing environment. We urge local government leaders and stakeholders to take action now to breathe new life into the Shirley Yard property and transform it into a park that reflects the strongest values of our community.
Please join me in this mission to create a lasting positive impact on our community by signing this petition. Together, we can make the dream of a community park in Mastic/ Shirley, NY a reality.
