Transform North and South Drive into One-Way with Pedestrian Lane

Transform North and South Drive into One-Way with Pedestrian Lane
The Issue
Transforming the North and South Drive road loop in Severna Park, MD, can increase safety and accessibility for both motorists and pedestrians by changing its traffic pattern.
Currently, the two-way street structure without sidewalks on North/South Dr. loop especially going around the curves in the road, causes a significant risk to pedestrians who are walking. The amount of pedestrian traffic walking around the loop has increased which includes people walking, dog walking, running and bike riders on both sides of the street, combined with the increase in non-resident delivery drivers has created a dangerous environment. Implementing a one-way system and dedicating the inside lane solely for pedestrian will provide a safer environment for non-vehicular traffic.
A 2021 study by the Federal Highway Administration shows that one-way streets can improve traffic flow by up to 43% and substantially reduce collision rates. By converting one lane exclusively for pedestrian traffic, we can assure that those on foot have a designated path, encouraging more residents to walk, cycle, and enjoy the neighborhood without the stress of vehicle interference.
The initiative not only benefits resident safety and mobility but also aligns with sustainable, community-centered urban planning practices. Enhanced walkability can lead to increased property values, healthier lifestyle choices, and stronger community ties.
currently all of the mailboxes are all on the same side of the street so the change would not impact USPS daily mailbox delivery.
Join our mission to make the Lower Magothy Beach North/South Drive loop in Severna Park a safer and more accessible community by signing this petition. Your support can drive positive change and help us take this proposal to the county council for consideration.
