Transform Idle Pre-K Center Into a Special Needs School

Transform Idle Pre-K Center Into a Special Needs School
The Issue
The story of my son, my niece, and countless others like them, is a testament to the urgent need for a local special needs school. These individuals have special needs, but this does not diminish their right to receive an equal education, within an environment adapted to their needs, with teachers who are specifically trained to help them reach their potential.
Our neighboring county, Lake Wales, has acknowledged this need and responded to it by opening a public school specifically designed to cater to students with special needs. Yet, in our own community, we are faced with an idle Pre-K center which is to be turned into a Highlands virtual center. Instead, we propose the unused Pre-K center to be utilized as a venue for a specialized public school for students with special needs.
The benefits and need for such a school are apparent. The US Department of Education affirmed in 2020 that students with disabilities have better outcomes when educated in an environment adapted to their specific needs, backed by teachers with special needs training. This is their right, as outlined in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) which guarantees all students access to a free and appropriate public education (FAPE), tailored to their individual needs.
This petition isn't just about our children. It's about the respect, dignity, and understanding every child deserves. It's about enhancing our educational system to be inclusive, diverse, and equal for everyone. So, let’s transform this unused Pre-K center into a beacon of hope, into a place where our children can thrive. It's time to ensure that our special needs students have the resources and spaces they require to flourish. We believe in their potential. Do you? Please sign this petition and help us realize their rights.
