The Issue

Living in Harlan County, Kentucky, I face an unfortunate reality each day when I want to take my children to play at the park. Like many families in our community, we are compelled to drive over an hour to find a park that is safe and clean for our kids. Our local parks, particularly the Blue Courts, are in dire need of attention; they are marred by rust, littered with filth, and even contaminated with drug paraphernalia. Such conditions render them unsafe and unwelcoming for our children.

Harlan County's parks should be havens where families can come together, where children can run, jump, and create lifelong memories without the shadow of danger looming over them. Having clean, safe, and well-maintained parks is not just a luxury—it is a fundamental right that every community member deserves. Our parks are vital for the physical and psychological well-being of our children and for fostering a sense of community.

Harlan County’s parks department needs to prioritize the refurbishment and maintenance of these green spaces. This includes the removal of hazardous materials, regular upkeep to ensure cleanliness, and installing modern, safe play equipment to replace old and unsafe structures. Additionally, implementing regular patrols to deter illegal activities can help maintain a secure environment for all park visitors.

According to the National Recreation and Park Association, parks provide both environmental and economic benefits to communities. They promote healthier lifestyles, reduce crime rates, and can even increase property values. Moreover, safe parks contribute to community cohesion and the overall happiness of residents.

We are calling on the Harlan County local authorities to allocate necessary resources and funds to restore and rejuvenate our parks. With the support of local businesses and community volunteers, we can transform these neglected areas into thriving community spaces. Let us unite for the well-being of our children and ensure they have safe places to play and grow.

Please stand with us in urging our local government to take immediate action. Sign this petition and demand the transformation of Harlan County parks into clean and safe spaces for everyone.
