Transform Andrew Street Bridge for Safety and Honor Zy’Jae
The Issue
I lost my nephew in a tragic accident, a burden no parent or grandparent should bear. Our community in Rochester, NY, is grieving the loss of Zy’Jae St Pierre, whose life was taken far too soon due to an unsafe structure on the Andrew Street bridge. Though this bridge meets city code requirements, it is crucial to address the inherent dangers it poses to our loved ones. The bridge's design resembles a makeshift step ladder, a perilous configuration that does not guarantee the safety of those who traverse it.
Despite adhering to technical specifications, the bridge's current design is inadequate for ensuring public safety, especially that of our children. The lack of protective measures could lead to similar unnecessary tragedies, ones that we can and should prevent. Our goal is twofold: to restructure this bridge, eliminating potential hazards, and to honor the memory of Zy’Jae St Pierre by renaming it "The Zy’Jae St Pierre Bridge".
In restructuring the bridge, engineers can apply modern safety standards to redesign and rebuild its framework, significantly reducing risks of accidents. By incorporating secure railings and child-safe barriers, we would ensure that no child or person falls victim to its previous inadequacies. Human lives, especially those of children, should not be endangered by structures such as this. By taking collective action, we can push for these changes to protect our community.
Honoring Zy’Jae through this dedication not only commemorates their life but serves as a constant reminder to prioritize safety. Transforming the Andrew Street bridge is not just about renaming; it’s about making a commitment to the lives of our residents.
Stand with us in calling for these essential changes. Let us ensure that no more lives are lost due to inadequate infrastructure. Sign this petition to make Andrew Street Bridge a monument of safety and remembrance.
