Transform 487 Ocean Parkway into a Community Garden

Transform 487 Ocean Parkway into a Community Garden
The Issue
Dear Neighbor,
This petition supports community-led efforts to transform a long-neglected vacant lot in Kensington, Brooklyn NY into a vibrant green space for the public. Through the motivated work of community members, the space has already been cleaned up from an overgrown patch of weeds and trash into a blank canvas - ripe for a new chapter of life and new community use.
Stewardship of the space is currently paused as the owners have recently blocked community access... but we are committed to trying to regain access, ensuring long-term success in this project.
This work cannot continue without the full support of the community, as well as the support of the owners. We are preparing to communicate our shared vision for the space to them, in the hopes of entering into a land-use agreement, so that the work may continue with their approval.
Your signature will help demonstrate the abundant support behind this project & illustrate how valuable this space is to the community.
Our neighborhood longs for a place where community members can socialize with and feel supported by neighbors, and reconnect with nature amidst the concrete jungle - to experience nature's invigorating benefits, and learn more about our environment.
City living can be so stressful, and having access to green space within the city can reduce stress and improve health in countless ways, including improved cognition, digestion, and sleep. Urban green spaces can also reduce local temperature by up to 9 degrees Fahrenheit, significantly helping to mitigate the urban heat island effect.
Through conversations among neighbors, we already envision so many wonderful uses of this space:
- locally grown food
- workshops and skill-shares
- potlucks and BBQ's
- open mics
- a shady oasis for relaxing
- and so much more!
Join our plea to the Kensington community and local authorities: let's work together to transform this vacant lot into a resource for community well-being and environmental justice. Please sign this petition and aid us in turning this dream into reality.
