In Livingston County Michigan, we've witnessed shocking neglect and brutality at the hands of law enforcement officers who should be protecting and serving our community. My horror story is sadly one of many: one man died due to medical neglect by sheriffs, another lost his toes, a third, a handicapped man pleading for medical assistance, was brutally kicked 11 times—his knee dislocated in the assault. If that wasn't enough, a fourth individual suffered permanent damage after being beaten while in the throes of a stroke. These are human beings, our neighbors, and they deserve dignity and care, not violence and negligence.

Sheriffs and law enforcement officers are often the first on the scene, and the first responders, in medical emergencies. However, all too often, they resort to criminalizing those in distress rather than providing them with the necessary aid. The incidents in Livingston County are painful reminders of this deeply ingrained systemic issue that requires immediate addressing.

Training our sheriffs to provide essential medical care can prevent these tragedies. In-depth training regarding the recognition and initial response to medical emergencies could empower our law enforcement officers to save lives rather than inadvertently endanger them.

Additionally, instituting a program where experienced medical professionals  are available 24/7 by video call to assist officers to evaluate situations could be immensely impactful. This partnership would not only provide on-the-spot medical assistance but also serve as an ongoing educational resource, helping officers learn how to handle various emergency situations with empathy and professionalism.

Fostering a program like this in Livingston County could serve as a model for other communities, showing a commitment to protecting the well-being of all citizens, regardless of their circumstances. It’s time to transform our approach to policing and put emphasis on care and understanding, with training that equips officers to handle situations compassionately and competently.
