My apologies for not sending this out sooner but we needed clarification on some poi
The Save George Carnall Group had a further meeting with Andy Western the new Leader of Trafford Council on 22nd November. As you know, the new Labour administration are tied to the proposals for the Urmston Leisure Centre redevelopment which is going ahead and means the Leisure Trust will stop running George Carnall as a Leisure Centre when Urmston is completed. They are also bound by a licence signed by the previous Conservative administration that lets Manchester Giants use the site, which was signed just hours before the local elections. However Andy is really keen to work with the group and with residents to ensure that the site remains as a community facility and that the activities offered at George Carnall are still available to residents on this site in future. He knows that many users of George Carnall will not be able to get to Urmston to use their facilities in future. The problem is that, because of the way the Tories changed the leisure service a few years ago, Trafford Leisure Trust can refuse to run George Carnall and are going to hand the keys back to the Council and refuse to provide the service when the Urmston development is finished. There is nothing Andy can do to stop them doing this, so he wants to work with the community to look at what we as residents want on the site and then find the best way of trying to deliver this without the Leisure Trust. It is really important that there is a proper public consultation about what people want and Andy is currently organising a consultation that will start in the new year that will ask residents what they want to see. We will share details of this with the mailing list when the consultation opens so that everyone is able to have their say.
We are really grateful to Andy for continuing to work with us on this. He has been handed a situation by the Conservatives in which they have brought Manchester Giants in and allowed taxpayers' money to be spent on doing up Urmston Leisure Centre at the expense of George Carnall. As a campaign group we will continue working with Andy to ensure that the activities residents want at George Carnall are provided in the future.
