We, the undersigned residents and members of the East Cobb community, respectfully request that the Cobb County Department of Transportation conduct a comprehensive traffic and safety study of the intersection of Sandy Plains Road and Mountain Road in Marietta, Georgia, including an evaluation of whether a traffic signal is warranted.

Sandy Plains Road is a heavily traveled arterial roadway, and residents who use Mountain Road must enter or cross this busy roadway without the assistance of a traffic signal.

We are concerned about the safety and difficulty of navigating this intersection, particularly during periods of heavy traffic. Turning onto Sandy Plains Road or crossing traffic can be challenging when vehicles are traveling in both directions along this major corridor.

We respectfully ask Cobb County DOT to conduct an updated engineering study that includes:

1. Current traffic-volume and turning-movement counts at Mountain Road and Sandy Plains Road
2. Vehicle speed data
3. Crash history and crash-pattern analysis
4. An evaluation of delays and available gaps for vehicles entering Sandy Plains Road from Mountain Road
5. Sight-distance and intersection-safety conditions
6. A formal evaluation of whether the intersection meets applicable traffic-signal warrants
7. Consideration of other appropriate safety improvements if a traffic signal is not warranted

Older Cobb County transportation records reported approximately 26,300 vehicles per day on Sandy Plains Road north of Mountain Road, based on a 2014 Cobb DOT traffic count. Because that information is now more than a decade old, we believe updated traffic data would provide valuable information about present-day conditions.

Our request does not presume what the engineering study should conclude. Rather, we are asking Cobb County to formally evaluate current conditions and determine whether a traffic signal or other intersection improvements are warranted to improve safety and access.

We ask Cobb County officials and the Cobb County Department of Transportation to prioritize this evaluation and communicate the results and any recommended improvements to residents.

We consider this a safety imperative for our families and community.
