Traffic Safety on Cleveland Street
The Issue
Imagine waving at your teenager leaving home pulling onto Cleveland Street on their first day of school, moments later to learn it was their last. Imagine picking up your child from daycare at the YMCA but you don’t make it home because you didn’t see that car in a rush in the oncoming lane. Imagine Sunday afternoon as you try to leave the Greenville Associated Reform Presbyterian Church or First Baptist Church with your entire family, headed to lunch but it never happens.
According to the National Traffic and Safety Administration more than 50% of car accidents happen within a five-mile radius from home. If you live, work or worship in this area, this affects you. And I hope you pay attention.
Cleveland Street is a major artery to downtown Greenville. It is currently already home to four large apartment complexes – no other major thoroughfare in Greenville has that many. Adding a new one with the existing traffic issues is extremely concerning for those of us organizing and hoping to fight back in the Alta Vista and surrounding neighborhoods. The Scottish Rite property was sold recently to an Atlanta developer who plans to build more than 118+ apartments and townhomes equating to a potential of 200 cars exiting and entering on Cleveland Street everyday on an already congested street. We need your help.
Important Points:
• The plan is for Only ONE Ingress/Egress (entry/exit) for over 200 + cars TWO times per day from the Entry/Exit onto Cleveland Street, this to be placed in between the two existing driveways for the current Scottish Rite Temple site. This is extremely problematic, especially in the mornings and after 4:00 pm weekdays, where there is already a huge traffic backup from all streets coming and going from the Cleveland Street and Faris Road traffic light.
• A significant concern is that this is precisely where the FOUR lanes on Cleveland Steet narrow into THREE lanes.
• Augusta Road recently went from a four-lane road to a two-lane road and traffic has increased on Cleveland for that reason.
• The new Greenville County office is going in on the corner of Church and University Ridge creating additional oncoming traffic to Cleveland as well.
Some neighbors in the area have attended the required meetings for the ACRE (https://acremgt.com/ developers to move forward with the project and have seen little to no changes to the plan based on requests while asking for current traffic studies to be done. They were told that the county conducted them, however, they have not been provided. This is concerning because the timeframe for the county studies is presumed to have been done during the pandemic when no one was on the road and without the additional changes and current traffic increase concerns. Residents in the area believe that adding a traffic light may not be the answer and potentially make it worse. We are most concerned for the safety of our families and need your help to raise concerns.
How can YOU help?
This proposed project must go before the City's Planning Commission for approval, and the date scheduled for the Commission to deliberate on this matter is Thursday, August 18th at 4:00pm.
Any individual desiring to express an interest in or concern with this proposed development should plan to do so at or before this meeting of the Planning Commission, as this is the time (by design) for public comment. There are a couple of ways in which one can relay their sentiments:
1. You may plan to attend and sign up to speak in person at the Planning Commission public hearing on August 18th, which will take place at the Unity Park Visitors Center.
2. You may submit written comments in advance to the attention of the Planning Commission, by e-mail at planning@greenvillesc.gov or by traditional mail at "City of Greenville Planning & Development Office, Attn: Planning Commission, P.O. 2207, Greenville, SC 29602". Written comments should be submitted by Monday, August 15th at 2pm to ensure receipt and review by the Planning Commission prior to the meeting on August 18th.
I will be there with other neighbors from Alta Vista neighborhood and invite you to join us – if you cannot make it, I urge you to write a letter and email it to the planning commission - we need every voice in this matter. Please help keep all our families safe.
