Traffic Light & Crosswalk On The Corner Of Park Ave. & N. San Juan Ave.
The Issue
This petition is to gather votes that ask the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the City of Montrose, CO to place a traffic light at the intersection of N. San Juan Ave. and Park Ave./6450 Road.
On June 5, 2023 there was a traffic accident at the intersection on N. San Juan Avenue and Park Avenue/6450 Road. A exemplary coworker's vehicle was totaled. Luckily, both he and his dog escaped with only minor injuries.
This is not the first accident to happen at this intersection. The constant traffic on N. San Juan makes it challenging to safely cross the street, merge with traffic heading in an opposite direction, and for pedestrians to safely cross a major road in our community. This is especially true when the sun is either rising or setting, which blinds a driver as he/she inspects for oncoming traffic.
When you want to cross N. San Juan on Park Avenue/6450 Road you must cross four lanes of traffic as well as deal with a constantly busy turning lane. Traffic moves at 45 miles per hour, sometimes faster than that.
As pedestrians who have traversed this area know, there are no crosswalks in this immediate area. If one wants to cross the street without the risk of being hit by a car, they must either walk to the corner of N. San Juan/ N. Townsend or the corner of N. San Juan/ E. Main St.
It is only a matter of time before a fatal accident once again occurs at this intersection. Four lanes of traffic, a busy turning lane, inadequate pedestrian crossing, and challenging weather conditions make the intersection unsafe. A traffic light and crosswalk placed here would maximize safety, alleviate the challenges of crossing this intersection, help pedestrians, and possibly reduce fatalities before they occur.
This petition is to gather votes that ask for CDOT and the City of Montrose to install a traffic light and crosswalk at the intersection on N. San Juan Ave. and Park Ave./6450 Road, which will help to regulate more cautious approaches, and lead traffic to flow at a safer rate.
