Several years ago, our neighbour was hit while sitting on his motorcycle waiting to turn into our driveway. The driver, intoxicated and speeding excessively, crashed into and ran over him. This harrowing incident, and several others since then, have brought to light the urgent need for traffic calming measures on Duncan Avenue East between Government and Main Street.

With more homes being constructed in the hills to the east of our neighbourhood, Duncan Avenue has increasingly become a preferred route for drivers traversing town. Unfortunately, some of these drivers see it as an opportunity to drive at dangerous and reckless speeds. The resulting situation is a heightened risk for residents, pedestrians, cyclists, and anyone else who utilizes this road on a daily basis.

Traffic calming measures such as speed bumps, additional signage, or radar speed signs can significantly reduce the speed of vehicles, making our roads safer for everyone. Studies by organizations such as the Institute of Transportation Engineers have shown that properly designed speed humps can decrease accidents by up to 39%. Implementing such measures on Duncan Avenue would not only lower the risks of accidents but also help preserve the quality of life in our community. There are traffic calming measures is areas of Penticton, like Burnaby Avenue near Riverside, where there are less residential buildings and less traffic, so why not on our street?

The inclusion of these traffic-calming devices is not just a hopeful solution; it’s a necessity. The safety of our community faces continual threat without strategic interventions. Encouraging drivers to adhere to safe and responsible driving through these implementations will foster an environment where residents feel secure.

I urge the City of Penticton to take immediate action by evaluating the situation on Duncan Avenue East and adopt appropriate traffic calming strategies. Protect the families who call this place home.
