Shrink-Wrapped Cucumbers. Bagged Broccoli. Plastic Everywhere!!

I’ve been a fan of Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s for years! Which is why once I realized the huge difference between each company’s “sustainability statement” (Trader Joe’s  / Whole Foods  ) and the reality of plastic waste in their stores, I felt tricked. Here are a few obvious examples :

PRODUCE: Fruit and vegetables are often packaged / bundled / wrapped in film plastic, hard plastic or mesh nets. Items like English cucumbers,  broccoli and cauliflower are sometimes even shrink-wrapped!

HOME-BRAND PRODUCTS: Both companies package numerous home-brand products - like nuts, snacks, dried fruit, fish fillets - in both obvious and HIDDEN plastic when there are proven, viable non-plastic alternatives utilized by other companies available.

FLOWERS: Cut flowers are wrapped in film plastic when paper could easily and effectively be used.

BAKERY: Cakes and pastries bought in Whole Foods come in plastic boxes. Bakeries have used paper / cardboard alternatives literally for centuries.

NO PLASTIC IS INDEFINITELY RECYCLABLE. If you package in plastic, even when it’s recycled ( And only about 8% of plastic is recycled in the US according to the EPA and only 9% of plastic EVER PRODUCED has been recycled ), you are simply “kicking the can down the road” before it becomes landfill or ocean waste. Design schools are BURSTING with talented young people who have the knowledge, awareness and anxiety about the reality of the climate crisis who can offer solutions. The simple fact is that sustainable packaging choices are options for Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods if the will and consumer pressure are there.

My efforts to reach multiple people in positions of power at TJs and WF have been ignored, so I’m turning away from the corporations and towards the people

Our Asks :

  • Both companies will immediately take meaningful and proactive measures to vastly reduce plastic and seek out alternate packaging solutions in their stores.

Plastic packaging must be eradicated in TJs and WF home-brand products.

Plastic must be removed wherever possible from their produce sections.

Cut flowers will be wrapped in paper, not plastic.

“Clamshells” and plastic boxes will be replaced in the to-go and bakery sections by eco-friendly alternatives.

Consumers are smart and we are tired of being greenwashed and dismissed! The companies that make it into the future will be companies that understand this and change accordingly.

Which side of history will Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods CHOOSE to be on? We would like to take you with us into the future, but that depends entirely on your actions now.
